Oil major Shell has announced that it is to continue to support the extremely successful Shell DonsLink Programme, launched twelve months ago, for the next two years. The after schools project, which uses football as the delivery vehicle to promote a healthy lifestyle and attitude among youngsters aged between 5 and 14, has now expanded to fifteen venues throughout the North East attended by more than six hundred boys and girls.

Commenting on the continuation of the sponsorship, Kieron McFadyen, Director Shell U.K. Limited, said. "Having initially committed to Shell DonsLink for a year, we have been extremely impressed with the project, hence this additional support for a further two years. As a major employer within the locality, Shell is committed to the North East community. In Aberdeen Football Club we have an excellent vehicle for exciting ventures such as this, combining education with the promotion of a healthy lifestyle."

Dons Executive Football Consultant Willie Miller added. "The partnership between Shell and Aberdeen Football Club is one of the longest, if not the longest, in Scottish football and we are delighted that they decided to continue their involvement with the DonsLink project. The Shell DonsLink Programme has evolved from the concept of after school clubs to something far more worthwhile and, thanks to Shell, we currently offer a comprehensive network of locations throughout the North East."

Each Shell DonsLink venue offers a minimum of two, hour long sessions every week during school term time, supervised by appropriately qualified coaches. In addition to the football education element, each venue is visited by a member of the AFC first team squad to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, a message that is reinforced through ad-hoc presentations to participants from other relevant bodies including Scotland Against Drugs.

Current Shell DonsLink venues comprise Loirston School, Cove, Jesmond Sports Centre, Culter Sports Centre, Kincorth Sports Centre, Newtonhill Community Centre, Strathburn Primary, Inverurie, St. Machar Academy, Portlethen Primary, Sheddocksley Sports Centre Inverurie Community Centre, Inverurie - Wyness Hall, Fraserburgh Academy, Kemnay Academy, New Aberdour & Mackie Academy.

Willie Miller concluded. "I believe we have created a sustainable programme that can be a legacy to the aims of Shell's Social Investment Programmes. It was our objective to have a Shell DonsLink venue within a reasonable distance of every youngster in the area and that is something we are close to achieving."
