bank of scotland premierleague

13 June 2005 10:26

Aberdeen Football Club has received the prestigious Bank of Scotland Premierleague Club in the Community award for the second season in a row. The award recognizes the significant contribution that the established "Dons in the Community" initiative has made to the local community.

The Bank of Scotland Premierleague Community Awards were established last season by Bank of Scotland and the SPL to recognise and celebrate the positive role that Premierleague clubs play in their respective communities and to highlight the efforts of individuals within those clubs.

Ray Macfarlane, Head of Community Investment at Bank of Scotland said, "Football clubs in Scotland do a lot of significant work in their local communities and it was an extremely difficult task deciding on the eventual winners. I would like to offer my congratulations to the winners and to say thank you to all the clubs in Premierleague for their dedicated work in the community in season 2004/05.

This season's awards were voted for by a judging panel that included Lex Gold, Executive Chairman of the Scottish Premierleague, Adele Mills, Sponsorship Manager at Bank of Scotland, Jim Fleeting, Head of Community Coaching for the Scottish Football Association, Richard Baker MSP and Jim Sheridan MP.

The award categories and winners for season 2004/2005:

Bank of Scotland Premierleague Club in the Community Aberdeen Football Club

Bank of Scotland Premierleague Best Community Initiative Dunfermline's Twilight League

Bank of Scotland Premierleague Player in the Community Scott Leitch

Bank of Scotland Individual in the Community PC Dougie Denhom

Lex Gold, Executive Chairman of the Scottish Premier League commented, "While the panel has selected those who should be regarded as leaders in this particular field, we must underline the work that is being carried out across all our clubs tackling a variety of community issues such as health, exercise, drug use, unemployment, racism, sectarianism and crime. Football can be a powerful vehicle for good. It is against that backdrop that the achievements of the winners should be viewed. The SPL congratulates the winning clubs and will continue to encourage all our clubs to engage purposefully in their communities."
