An Aberdeen Motherwell match from 1964

19 January 2007 20:53

If the Aberdeen Motherwell match goes ahead tomorrow it will be the 229th league meeting between the two sides. Kevin Stirling looks back at the fixture ahead of the game. A game that now takes on a greater significance following Thursday night's cup exit.

Aberdeen have a decent record against Motherwell in previous league meetings. With 97 wins and only 56 defeats, that record stands up against any other in the Dons records. Back in 1978-79 in Alex Ferguson's first season in charge the Dons recorded the highest ever win in Premier League football with an 8-0 win. While Aberdeen hit the goal trail that night, it was a complete misery for former Dons boss Ally MacLeod who was then in charge of the Fir Park side. While that record remains, in 1999 a remarkable game ended in an astonishing 6-5 win for the Dons at Fir Park. Aberdeen could not buy a goal back then in what was Ebbe Skovdahl's first season in charge, but they went in at both ends on a crazy night's football with Robbie Winters getting three for the Dons. It is not often that a team who scores six away from home would end up hanging on at the end but that was certainly the case back then in a remarkable game. The longest undefeated sequence for the Dons was 23 years and that was eventually broken in 1994 when Motherwell won here under new manager Alex McLeish who had left Pittodrie some months earlier after a memorable Aberdeen career as a player.

Joe Harper in the 1970's

Redfact: Joe Harper has twice scored hat tricks against Motherwell in previous league meetings. In the 1979 rout Harper bagged three while in the 7-2 win at Pittodrie in 1972 he weighed in with three on that occasion. Johnny Miller of 1920's fame was the first Aberdeen player too score a hat trick against Motherwell in 1923. Other Dons who have done the 'trick' against Motherwell include Norman Davidson, Ernie Winchester, Dave Robb and Robbie Winters.

Connections
Aberdeen legend Donald Colman was the first player to play for both sides back in 1905 when he joined Aberdeen. Colman was an integral part of the Aberdeen side that played in the clubs formative years and beyond. Colman remained at Pittodrie as trainer and he remains the oldest Aberdeen player to be capped at 33. Current Aberdeen match day lounge host Jimmy Wilson was another who played for both clubs as Jimmy was involved in the transfer that took George Murray to Pittodrie in 1970. In 1982 when Aberdeen were riding high at home and abroad, Motherwell manager Jock Wallace brought in both Andy Dornan and Andy Harrow in a double transfer deal. Both players were on the fringes of the first team at Pittodrie. Steve Cowan was another who found it difficult to make the breakthrough into the Aberdeen first team in that all-conquering side and he to had a successful spell with Motherwell after being sold to Hibernian. That role was reversed in 2003 when Steve Paterson agreed deals to take both Derek Adams and Steven Craig to Pittodrie from the Steelmen. On the managerial front former Gothenburg legend Alex McLeish took his first steps into coaching with Motherwell in 1994. Ally MacLeod who won the League Cup at Pittodrie before taking over as Scotland boss, was also in charge at Fir Park.

Jackie Benyon 1n 1935

Redfact: Jackie Benyon, who tragically died on the Dons tour to South Africa in 1937, had the distinction of scoring Aberdeen's 50th goal against Motherwell at Pittodrie in the 2-0 win in September 1936. Willie Callaghan scored the Dons 100th against the Fir Park side in the Dons 3-0 win at Pittodrie in October 1961. In the Dons 8-0 rout in March 1979, Joe Harper notched the Dons 150th goal against Motherwell while Eoin Jess had the honour of the 200th goal when he scored in the 3-0 Aberdeen win in December 1997.

Fans are reminded that Motherwell have reduced the price of all tickets heading into tomorrow's match at Fir Park and that there will be a pitch inspection tomorrow morning at Fir Park at 8.00am. The playing surface at the moment is playable but the forecast later this afternoon and evening is for more rain.

The home side have arranged for a local referee to inspect the surface. Sandy Clark will also be in attendance. As soon as we have heard any news we will publish it on Redweb. If you are not near a computer listen to Northsound or BBC Radio Scotland if you are outside the Aberdeen area.

Ticket prices have been reduced to the following:
Adult: 15
Conc: 8
U16: 4
Please note that this match is pay-at-the-gate.
