ENCOURAGING PERFORMANCE AS B TEAM DRAW WITH FINLAND

Scotland were hit by a late equaliser as Finland hit back to earn a draw in the Tennent's B International at Rugby Park last night.

In chilly conditions, a healthy crowd of 3,702 watched alongside Alex McLeish as the young Scotland team took on their Finnish counterparts, with possible places in the Euro 2008 campaign at stake. Aberdeen?s Chris Clark started the game in midfield.

However, Scotland were stunned with less than three minutes on the clock as the visitors took the lead through Jari Llola, who pounced on a cutback into the box to shoot home. The lead was short-lived, as Scotland equalised in 11 minutes. Stephen Pearson intercepted a pass in midfield and surged forward, providing a pinpoint pass to Shaun Maloney on the edge of the penalty box to fire the ball into the net.

Scotland continued to press forward but were frustrated by numerous offside calls against Beattie and Maloney up front. Kevin Thomson, captaining the side, was cautioned for a tackle on Perparim Hetemaj that saw the defender taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg. At Half time Jamie Langfield replaced Pual Gallacher in the Scotland goal.

Midway through the second half, Scotland made a range of substitutions and this immediately freshened up the attack. Alan Gow, making his debut at this level, scored within two minutes of coming on, heading in a Beattie corner to make it 2-1. Darren Mackie came on with 22 minutes to go and the striker look lively. Scotland could have extended their lead, as the fresh players surged forward, but the team was hit by a sucker punch in 82 minutes as Finland won a rare corner. Sjolund's cross was headed in by Hearts striker Juho Makela for the equaliser.

Despite the disappointing end, it was a useful exercise for the players, several of whom will surely feature in the A squad in the future.

Scotland: Gallacher (Langfield 46), Hutton, McEveley (Barr 61), S Brown (Fowler 68), Greer, Broadfoot, Clark, Maloney, Beattie (Mackie 68), Thomson (Adam 61), Pearson (Gow 61).

DEFEAT FOR UNDER 21s

Scotland Under 21s went down 2-0 to Germany at Broadwood Stadium last night, the first time the Germans have ever won a match at this level in Scotland.

Scotland's preparations were disrupted before kickoff as Charlie Mulgrew injured his ankle in the warmup and was replaced by Ryan Conroy in the starting lineup.

The Germans took the lead mid way through the first half as a poor clearance by goalkeeper McNeil was pounced on by Ebert and his return pass was cleanly volleyed into the net by Aaron Hunt in 22 minutes.

Scotland livened up in the second half but found it hard to make an impact against a strong and fast German side. Ebert hit the bar with a shot, and the second goal came shortly afterwards in 76 minutes as Ebert's free kick found substitute Flessers unmarked at the back post for a simple goal.

Chances were few for the Scots, with Naismith working hard up front but always confronted with resolute defending. Andrew Considine made a late appearance as a substitute.

Scotland: McNeil (McDonald 46), Ross, Wallace, Fitzpatrick (Considine 85), Cuthbert (capt), Reynolds, McGlinchey (Smith 46), Robertson (Dorrans 46), Naismith, Quinn (Adams 69), Conroy.

BLANK SCORE FOR UNDER 19s

Scotland Under 19s on Tuesday drew their second match in the La Manga Tournament, 0-0 with Slovakia.

Having defeated Austria on Sunday, the Scots continued their good form in the afternoon sunshine but were unable to break down a solid Slovakian defence and a draw was a fair result.

Scotland finish the tournament against Norway on today, and a win would secure top spot in the competition. Chris Maguire, Andrew Bagshaw and Michael Paton are all involved.

NO GOALS FOR UNDER 17s

Scotland Under 17s could not find the net in their second match against Northern Ireland today, the match ending 0-0.

The freezing weather forced the game to be moved from its original location in Larne to the Ashfield all weather surface in Belfast.

Although the Scots were unable to score this time and repeat Monday's 2-0 victory, they extended their unbeaten run and have now gone four matches without conceding a goal.

The big challenge comes next month as the players head to Germany for the next round of the UEFA Under 17 Championship. They face Republic of Ireland on 21 March, followed by Germany and Greece, with the winners reaching the tournament finals.
