The former Aberdeen captain won his last cap against Germany in the Scots 1-0 win in 1999. Whyte began his career at Celtic in 1985 and went on to make more than 200 appearances for the Parkhead club before moving to Middlesborough in 1992. Alex Miller brought Whyte back to Scotland in 1997 in a £100,000 deal. The Dons defender made his Scotland debut against Belgium at Hampden, replacing Maurice Malpas in the second half in the Scots 2-0 win. After a brief appearance against Luxembourg, Whyte did not feature in the Scotland side for another two years.
Derek made 154 appearances for Aberdeen and captained the Dons in the 2000 Scottish Cup Final. He left Aberdeen to join Partick Thistle in 2002 and had a spell as the Jags co-manager with Gerry Britton.
