OPENING OF SEASON.
Orion opened the foot¬ball season on Saturday with a Northern League fixture with Montrose at Cattofield. The weather was cold and dull, with intermittent showers of rain, but notwithstanding there was a large concourse of spectators present. Mr Forbes, Forfar, was referee, and the teams were: Montrose - A. Bowman; Tosh, McLean; C. Bowman, Smith, Lambie; Thomson, Walker, McPherson, Moir, Watson. Orion - McBean; Gordon, Ross; Currie, Low, Dawson; McLennan, Thom, Keith, Leggatt, Torbet.

Orion had the best of the opening stages, and kept Montrose, who had the advantage of the incline, well within their own lines. A goal kick relieved the pressure, and then Montrose had a look in, McBean saved a fine shot, and the backs soon put the ball out of danger. Orion continued for some time in the visitors' territory, but all their efforts to obtain a point were for some time baffled by the splendid defence. At length a swift shot from Keith opened the scoring for Orion. Keeping up the pressure, McLennan secured a second goal for the Stripes, and shortly before half-time Thom added a third point. When the teams changed ends, Orion were leading by three goals to nil.

Having the incline in their favour in the second period, Orion early began to increase their total. Low shot the fourth goal, but from the kick-off Thomson got the ball and raced along the wing, finishing a capital piece of play by landing the ball past McBean into the net, thus obtaining the first goal for Montrose. From this stage to the close Orion had pretty much their own way, hemming the visitors in to their own quarters, and never allowing them to get clear. Before the whistle blew four other goals bad been registered, and the game ended: Orion 8, Montrose 1.
