A sixth & final meeting of the season with Celtic saw Derek McInnes make three changes to the side which was defeated at Ibrox the previous weekend. Out went the suspended Andrew Considine & the injured pair of Stephen Gleeson and Connor McLennan. They were replaced by Greg Stewart, Michael Devlin and Shay Logan who made his first appearance since his injury in February. Youngsters- Dean Campbell, Jack Mackenzie, Miko Virtanen, Ethan Ross & David Danagana all found a place on the Dons bench- the Dons injury ravaged squad meant there was little experience available for the manager to pick from.
Before kick off, Pittodrie paid its respects to Scottish football icon, former Dons manager Billy McNeill a day after his funeral mass. It was also a chance to remember another member of Celtic?s Lisbon Lions- Stevie Chalmers, who passed away this week.
Joe Lewis was forced into an early save when a cross to the back post was headed on by Rogic but the Dons keeper saved comfortably low down.
The visitors enjoyed a lot of possession early on but the game was being played at a fairly sedate pace. Greg Stewart was penalised for a soft foul on Kieran Tierney after the ball had gone on 9 minutes and moments later it was the Celtic man who was penalised for a foul on the on loan Birmingham City man.
Dominic Ball picked up a yellow card on 12 minutes, when referee John Beaton adjudged that he had fouled Callum McGregor a few yards outside The Dons box. It looked more a tangle of legs than anything but thankfully Celtic couldn?t make anything of it.
At the other end, Greg Stewart twisted and turned a few times before delivering a cross but it was met by the head of Lustig ahead of Cosgrove. Forrest got a bit of luck when he tried to clear the ball but slipped.
On 17 minutes, good play down the left saw Ferguson find Stewart who had made a great run, he delivered the cross which fell for James Wilson but his attempted volley went narrowly over the bar. In front of him, Stevie May appeared to be pushed but nothing was given.
Timothy Weah was next to pick up a yellow card when he pulled Shay Logan back on the halfway line. From the resultant free kick, the ball fell nicely in the box but no one in a red shirt could get on to it and Celtic cleared up field. The long ball evaded Scott McKenna and Michael Devlin and fell for Edouard who raced forward but a combination of Lewis and Logan managed to get a challenge in to deny the Celtic man a shot on goal.
Kristoffer Ajer found himself in the book on 23 minutes when he upended James Wilson who was running forward.
The game began to quicken up and just before the half hour, The Dons put together a nice move. Greg Stewart managed to get the ball out to the left for Max Lowe and he drove past James Forrest before delivering a promising low cross but no one could get on the end of it and the visitors cleared. Replays showed Rogic had stamped on Dominic Ball?s shoulder in the build up.
The Dons created a glorious chance on 32 minutes. Scott McKenna collected the ball and drove forward before delivering a sublime ball to the back post for Sam Cosgrove. His shot was saved by the legs of Scott Bain, and the rebound fell perfectly for James Wilson but his first time shot hit the post and went out of play.
3 minutes later, the visitors had an opportunity when Edouard laid the ball off for Forrest just outside the box but his effort curled narrowly wide of Joe Lewis?s right hand post. The weather conditions then took a turn for the worst, with heavy rain making for a slippery surface.
On 40 minutes, Celtic took the lead. A simple ball to the back post from Callum McGregor found Lustig who headed low past Lewis. It was harsh on The Dons who had had the better chances.
Then Shay Logan got booked for a challenge on Tierney.
HALF TIME | Aberdeen 0-1 Celtic
Neither side made any changes at the break. Aberdeen made a decent start to the second period. Max Lowe stabbed the ball away from Scott Brown and found Stevie May- his cross was met by Wilson but under pressure from Ajer he couldn?t gather it properly and the ball bounced off the post and out for a goal kick.
Six minutes in to the half, Lustig?s cross found the unmarked Edouard at the back post but Lewis was able to smother his effort and clear it for a corner. From the resultant corner Celtic doubled their lead. Simunovic rose highest and headed the ball beyond Joe Lewis. An uphill struggle for The Dons now.
Jonny Hayes then replaced Kieran Tierney who took an age to leave the field of play.
With 61 minutes on the clock, The Dons made a good break forward but James Wilson couldn?t bring Sam Cosgrove?s cross under control and it bounced off the on loan Manchester United striker and the visitors cleared.
The sides exchanged spells of possession before Sam Cosgrove picked up a booking for a challenge on Jonny Hayes. The former Dons winger eventually received treatment off the pitch. Greg Halford replaced Shay Logan who had managed 71 minutes on his return to action after 12 games out.
Dean Campbell then replaced Sam Cosgrove who as on a yellow card while Oliver Burke replaced Timothy Weah for Celtic. There was a scare for Greg Halford just moments after he came on when he appeared to slip and injure himself off the ball but luckily he was able to continue.
With 15 minutes remaining, Edouard picked up the ball from Forrest in the centre of the box but his effort was too powerful and went over the bar. A couple of minutes later, the ball fell for Greg Stewart just outside the Celtic box but his shot curled wide of the post.
Greg Halford went down again on the 81st minute and this time couldn?t continue- he was replaced by Ethan Ross for the closing stages of the match. His first involvement in the match saw him play a good pass for Lewis Ferguson and as Hayes stepped in to try and shepard the ball out of play it bounced up and hit him. From the corner kick, James Wilson?s decent cross was met by Michael Devlin, but his low effort was held well on the line by Scott Bain.
Celtic made it 3-0 with 2 minutes remaining when Edouard fired past Joe Lewis with a crisp finish.
Scott Brown was booked for an unnecessary lunge on substitute Ethan Ross while Sinclair came on for the injured Lustig. Celtic saw out the game to claim the league championship.
