Although Aberdeen had won the real first League Cup Final the season before, this was the "official" first. Aberdeen prepared for the match at Largs and fielded the same side as the previous season, as did Rangers, but the outcome was drastically different.
Having won the toss, the Dons chose to play into a torrent of gale driven rain. The tactic backfired and instead of the hoped for goalless first half, they found themselves three goals down at the turnaround.
In the second half Aberdeen had two good penalty claims but referee Calder dismissed them. The Dons had much more of the game but George Hamilton was injured in that half which did not help. But they could not turn their better play into goals and the heavy 4-0 defeat was the final outcome.
