Dons win in Blue Toon
Aberdeen comfortably beat Peterhead tonight to lift the Scottish Week Challenge Trophy. A double from Michael Bird in the first half set up the win and Sheerin added a third in the second period with low drive that gave Mathers no chance. The Dons now head to Bradford for the English club?s centenary tournament as Steve Paterson continues the build up for the new campaign.

Aberdeen kicked off in 3-5-2 formation with an unusual back three of Hart, Deloumeaux and Tiernan and new signings Scott Booth and Michael Bird leading the attack. The Dons dominated the opening twenty minutes of the match without carving out any clear cut chances.

Peterhead had four ex-Dons in their starting line up and it was two of these old boys that created the home sides best chance of the match. Duncan and Roddie combined well before Roddie fired in a dangerous cross which was missed by three Peterhead players. They were to regret this miss minutes later when Bird headed in the opener in the 21st minute.

Good build up play saw Souter chip the ball into the Peterhead penalty area where Sheerin collected and went wide. He brilliantly turned his marker and fired in a cross which Bird headed home from close range. The Dons then stepped up the pace and eventually grabbed a second on the stroke of half time. McCulloch fired in a cross from the right which Scott Booth flicked on to Bird. The new signing calmly chipped the ball over the keeper's head to grab his and Aberdeen's second of the night.

There was less excitement in the second period, but the Dons third goal was certainly the highlight. Sheerin continued where he left off last season when, in the 66th minute, he drove a low drive past Mathers from the edge of the Peterhead box to secure the win. Eric Deloumeaux was picked as man of the match as the Dons lifted the Scottish Week Challenge Trophy. Although Eric played well a mention must also go to some of the young members of the team who aquitted themselves well with Souter and McCulloch putting in fine performances.

Steve Paterson was a lot happier after this performance and told Red Web, ?This was a more experienced side tonight and they played well. I was pleased with the way Michael Bird took his goals and it can only help his confidence.? Aberdeen now prepare for the Bradford centenary tournament at the weekend as they go looking for a second piece of pre season silverware.
