Italians cancel out Rico super strike.
Having returned from Turin with two away goals and having just moved clear at the top of the Premier League, Aberdeen entered this match full of confidence. When Lee Richardson put them ahead in the tie with a spectacular strike in the 12th minute a quarterfinal place looked to be on the cards. Unfortunately a tap in from Fortunato before half time and a Silenzi header just after the interval ended the Dons interest in the tournament.

As they had in Torino Aberdeen started positively with the Pittodrie crowd backing them to the hilt. The red army didn't have to wait too long for their reward and it was a goal to savour. A probing run from McKimmie resulted in Paatelainen flicking the full back's cross into the danger area. Delle Carri's half clearance found Lee Richardson 20 yards out and the midfielder, hitting the sweetest strike of his career, found the postage stamp corner of the net to put the Dons ahead in the tie.

Richardson's goal forced the Italians out if their defensive shell although the home side continued to dominate the match. Torino almost responded within five minutes when Silenzi hit a 20-yard effort inches wide. The visitors were forced into a change in the 20th minute when Gregucci went off with blood pouring from a head wound after a clash with Paatelainen. Just as it looked as though Aberdeen would reach half time in relative comfort Fortunato scored five minutes before the interval. Some clever work from Carbone set up the goal, but McKimmie should have cleared before Fortunato was given the chance to tap in.

Worse was to follow seven minutes after the interval as Carbone once again provided the ammunition for Torino. He deceived McKimmie on the left and found Silenzi in the centre to head past the helpless Snelders. Aberdeen now required two goals just to take the tie into extra time. The Italians expertly shut up shop and although the Dons dominated the rest of the match they just couldn't convert any of the chances. Richardson went closest in the closing minutes when He sent a shot just wide of Gucci's post.
