The controversy that preceded this friendly was a source of frustration for the small band of Aberdeen followers that were not allowed entry to this game. Carlisle decided at the eleventh hour to play the game without the paying public, and the eerie atmosphere did little to raise this contest above the mediocre. Aberdeen created few chances as both Robbie Winters and Eoin Jess were rested. It was left to Arild Stavrum to score the goals that gave the Dons a deserved victory.

Stavrum was on hand to open the scoring after 21 minutes and the visitors went further ahead 14 minutes later as the big Norwegian finished off a fine move as he linked up with Hicham Zerouali. In a game that the Dons controlled throughout, Carlisle went through around twenty players as the game never moved into second gear. Carlisle managed to pull a goal back 11 minutes in to the second half, but never really threatened the Dons lead.

Ebbe Skovdahl was happy enough with his team's sojourn in the south, as the players increased their fitness levels, although injuries to several established defenders was giving cause for concern.
