Stalemate Against the Bairns

MATCH: Aberdeen U20 0 v 0 Falkirk U20

COMPETITION: SPL U20 League

DATE: Monday 29th October 2012

VENUE: Glebe Park, Brechin

KICK-OFF: 2pm

Aberdeen and Falkirk's U20 sides drew nil-nil at Brechin's Glebe Park this afternoon. Falkirk were the better side in the first period but Aberdeen responded well in the second half but neither side could make the breakthrough.

The Dons, who were without Cammy Smith ahead of the cup quarter-final tomorrow night, lined up with Rogers in goal, Murray at right back, Rose and Shaughnessy in central defence with Duguid at left back. The midfield trio were Brown, Gibbon and Jamie Masson with McManus and O'Neill pushing forward to support O'Sullivan.

Jamie Masson made his first appearance for nearly two months after recovering from injury and lasted the whole 90 minutes. Jamie Masson in action today

The early stages of the game were devoid of any clear cut chances for either side. Jamie Masson did fire a free kick just wide of the post for the home side before Joe Shaughnessy, who was outstanding throughout the game, had to look sharp to stop a dangerous Falkirk attack. The Bairns should have taken the lead on 37 minutes though when Thomas Grant, son of former Dons star Brian, found himself in acres of space but blasted over the bar. Falkirk, coached by ex Dons Stevie Crawford and Neil McFarlane, also had other chances in the first half.

Just before half time Jamie Masson went on a great run from his own half but he too shot over when he had support from Jordon Brown to his right.

HT 0-0

The Dons performed much better in the second half- particularly after Craig Murray moved into the centre of the park- and he was unlucky no to score when his shot was tipped onto the post by Falkirk keeper Graham Bowman. Jamie Hamilton replaced Alan O'Sullivan and this allowed Jordon Brown to move up front alongside Declan McManus.

Craig Duguid made a superb challenge to avert a dangerous when Andy Haworthlooked like he would score for Falkirk. At the other end McManus found himself through on goal but shot straight at Bowman after another good run by Murray. Aberdeen pushed for a winning goal with time running out and a good cross from Jamie Hamilton was well defended before the referee blew for full time. A draw was probably a fair result in the end.
