Reserves On Goal Spree
We beat Dundee United at Tannadice by six goals to nil, to keep up our challenge for the Reserve League Championship. Duncan Davidson was our top scorer with three goals. Alan Oliver was rewarded for his hard work by getting two and Derek Hamilton playing in the unaccustomed position on the left wing scored our sixth.
The players who did the most for us were mid-field players Joe Smith and Neil Simpson. These two had a good understanding with each other, and their use of the ball was first class. Joe was named for the pool to travel to Ayr for the first leg in the League Cup Quarter-final, but had to call off because of the "flu". Young "Simmy" took his place, but wasn't called on. However travelling with the first team will give him valuable experience.
To get back to the game - at Tannadice, John Gardiner had very little to do, as defenders Doug Considine, Neil Cooper, Steve Ritchie and Andy Dornan were right on top of their jobs. Neil had his best game for some time, and his use of the ball was excellent, young Andy Dornan, who was left out of the Scottish pool (his opposite number Raymond Lorimer was preferred) was in a different class from the United No. 2. Duncan Davidson's speed troubled the United defenders and his three goals were the result of his alertness in front of goal. Alan Oliver our other striker had one of his best games for us and he is gaining in confidence with every game.
One player who is giving us concern, is Andy Watson. He has lost his confidence just now, but we have a lot of faith in Andy, and I'm sure he will get over this lapse of form.
