big red quiz a big red success

11 October 2014 11:59

The Big Red Quiz at Pittodrie on Friday night turned out to be a great event and very successful in helping AFC Heritage Trust raising funds. A healthy attendance was subjected to a tough testing of their knowledge of all things AFC as well as the wider world of football. Round after round of searching questions and challenging pictures were thrown at the teams by MC for the night Dave Macdermid who clearly took some pleasure in winding up the atmosphere with pithy quips aimed at embers of the company.
Half time gave the contestants a chance to draw breath whilst digging into plates of stovies with beetroot and oatcakes and not a few remarked that it would be great to be able to get such delicacies on matchdays (Sodexo Prestige please note!). This too was the chance for the Trust to show contestants a great example of the kind of work that goes on through the efforts of AFC Heritage. A pair of boot that were used by George McNicol back in 1904/05 was shown round the Teddy Scott Lounge so that people could see at close quarters what players wore back then. The boots had been rescued from a skip at Pittodrie back in 1993 and then lain unidentified in a shed for twenty years. As soon as they were show to the Trust the significance of the boot was realised and the name of George McNicol spotted scratched into the leather inside the uppers.
It is believed that these may very well be the boots that McNicol wore when playing for the Wasps against Renton at Dens Park in the Qualifying Cup Final of November 1904. McNicol was the scorer of the two goals that brought the first National piece of silverware back to Pittodrie, much to the delight of their followers and the whole City of Aberdeen.
The boots were in poor condition but the Heritage Trust immediately took them to conservation experts at Hopetoun House and paid 300 to have them very carefully cleaned and conserved so that they can be seen by Dons? fans now and into the future. A display cabinet is currently being made for the boots and when it is ready, they will be put on show in the Black and Gold Lounge at Pittodrie.

The quiz was won by the tightest of margins by a team made up by Neil Simpson, Colin Massie, David Bowman and Sandy Riach and they were awarded individual medals as well as a trophy that they will hold for the next twelve months. At the end of the evening raffle prizes were drawn and an energetic auction gave people the chance to get their hands on some hard to get Dons memorabilia with an Adam Rooney League Cup Final shirt leading the way. The Trust would like to thank everybody who contributed items and also the management and players for signing pieces for us.

Roll on next year when the Big Red Quiz will Be Bigger, Redder and Quizier that ever.
