female footballers in aberdeen

19 July 2017 10:31

Before an Attendance of almost 6000 persons "the new women" made their appearance at the Victoria Bridge Grounds. Ten players dressed in red blouses and dark blue knickers represented the north, and nine members attired in blue blouses and blue knickers represented the south. Winning the toss, the Reds kicked off. All eyes were turned on the "little wonder," whom the crowd persisted in calling "Tommy," and who played on the left inside. Her mother, who occupied the centre, came in for a deal of chaffing. The ball off, "Tommy" and his mother "Charlie" sped along the field in quick time. The blue's custodian ? a tall, well-built woman (Mrs Graham), with a graceful step, approached "Tommy," and quickly relieved her of the ball. Nothing daunted, however, "Charlie" and "Tommy" returned to the attack, and the former with a strong kick banged the leather through. Laughter and cheers greeted this success on the part of the Reds. The outside right (Miss Coupland) made a capital run along the wing, and, passing to the inside "man," shot another goal. Cries of "Com' awa yoursel', Charlie," and "Now pass to Tommy." The Blues, however, got possession of the sphere, and the centre, after a hard struggle with "Tommy," kicked the ball, which rolled tamely through. Half time was called, with the Beds leading by one goal. Ends changed, the Blues tried hard to equalise but the Reds, who were by far the best exponents of the game, kept their goal intact. No more scoring took place. When the whistle sounded the spectators invaded the field, and crowded round the players, who, with great difficulty and the assistance of a strong force of constables, managed to reach the pavilion. The crowd remained outside the gates in a demonstrative mood, and some time elapsed before the teams had the temerity to drive off to their hotel.?

Reported in the Aberdeen Daily Journal, 27th May 1895

Sadly the reporter neglected to give any information about where these players came from and the game was not even mentioned in the Bon-Accord magazine which is usually a great source of football details. Nor was there a photographer present to "record the happy scene."
