aberdeen captain shot dead
Joseph Haise

13 July 2018 19:51

A short few months after the newly merged Aberdeen FC Played their first match, still nicknamed the Whites, the first ever Captain of the original club, Joseph Haise, was shot and fatally wounded in Dublin.

The shooting took place at a Bazaar in the Sackville Hall in Ireland's capital at a fundraising Bazaar for the Presbyterian Association, on the 22nd of October 1903. The next day a Police Court was convened where a Police Constable Carruthers recounted that he had witnessed the incident whilst on duty at the bazaar. A shooting gallery had been set up at the back of the hall and he had heard a cry and seen Mr Haise running through the hall, bleeding from the mouth. After calling for the Corporation Ambulance, the officer had gone to the shooting gallery and found two Winchester rifles, one with a discharged cartridge. He then arrested the man running the gallery, one Colin Bennie [Binnie in some reports]. There had been many witnesses present and during the inquest that immediately followed the Court hearing, a Dr Delany from the Jarvis Street Hospital explained how Mr Haise had been shot in the neck and the bullet had passed through his jugular vein.

It emerged that one of the Winchesters had gone off whilst being handed, ready loaded, to a paying customer. In the end the jury exonerated the accused man, Colin Anderson Binnie, from all blame.

During the proceedings another witness, a Reverend Johnston, told the inquiry that when he queried the safety of the gallery Mr Haise had, ironically, assured him of its perfect safety and nothing more was said as the gallery was at the back of the hall away from other entertainments.

Joseph Henry Haise was one of the founding members of the Aberdeen Association Football Club and at the inaugural meeting had been appointed Captain. However, in the end he played only one game - against Coupar Angus on the 14th of April 1882, having already resigned from the post of Captain as he was unhappy to be in that position. He was also the first player to sport an A.F.C. badge on his shirt.
