As a player, Neil struggled to get a first team game at Pittodrie because his fellow central defenders were the likes of Willie Miller, Willie Garner and Alex McLeish. However, he had a big influence on the players when he returned to Pittodrie and in particular coached the youth team, often playing in reserve matches so that he could influence the players on the pitch. Became a manager in his own right at Forfar Athletic and later at Inverurie Locos.
