After a solid career with the Dons, during which he participated in a League winning campaign in 1979-80 and gathered a League Cup winners' medal in 1976, Willie began moving into management when he joined Alloa Athletic in 1982.In 1984 he returned to Pittodrie as assistant to Alex Ferguson for a couple of years before moving on once again.
With the growth of viewing of RedTV at the beginning of the Covid19 pandemin in 2020, Willie became part of the commentary team, providing well receieved expertise on the Dons' matches.
On 5th May 2022 it was announded that he had been appointed to the Pittodrie board as a non-executive director.
