Attended Aberdeen Grammar School and was an insurance inspector to trade with North & British & Mercantile Insurance Company. Moved to Dundee in June 1908 to take up a position of Resident Secretary with the Law, Union & Crown Insurance Company. Was an excellent cricketer and was the only player in Scotland to score over 1000 runs in the 1907 season. He represented both Aberdeen and Forfarshire
