On 29th August 2021 the Club announce that it had struck a deal with Hamburg to bring the big defender to Pittodrie on a three year contract. he had previously played for Raith Rovers and Rangers with brief loan spells at East Stirlingshire, Brechin City, Sheffield Wednesday and Cercle Brugge.
At the time of signing he had gained four Scotland International caps.
His time at Pittodrie was not a success, although he made 34 appearances in his first season, with the defence shipping goals and the team playing poorly. With the start of the 2022-2023 season, Manager Jim Goodwin built a new defence and there were no more appearances for Bates. On 1st September 2022 it was announced by the Club that he had been permanently transferred to K.V. Mechelen.
