a good deal of excitement swept the north east when news got out of negotiations to sign Joe. It took a few weeks, but in late January 1956 he flew from Johannesburg with high expectations all round. He made his Dons' debut in the Reserves against East Fife and scored his first goals against Motherwell A in an 8-2 victory. Botha was a popular player but by December 1956 it emerged that he was suffering from homesickness at a time when he had dropped out of the limelight and was making only occasional appearances for the reserves. He was released at the end of April 1957 and returned to South Africa.

Joe was an apprentice bookbinder to trade with a Biksburg firm and when he came to Aberdeen he hoped to complete the apprecticeship locally.
