After giving him a two-week trial period, manager Tommy Pearson decided to sign Michael, who had been an amateur with Ashington. As well as playing professional football, Mike had a reputation as being a fine cricketer. He was described as "The finest bowler seen at Ellon since the war!" He turned out for Ellon in a match against Gordonians in a Grade 1 fixture.
