A SUSTAINED effort in the last quarter of the game failed to save Aberdeen a point in their closing League match against Motherwell at Fir Park on Saturday.
The Dons were a trifle unlucky to go down 2-1. Both teams were sound in defence, but both lacked a sharpshooter in attack.
Pearson and Baird formed the best wing afield. They struck up a good understanding and their clever interchanging of positions often had the home defence puzzled.
Kelly was a lively leader for the Dons, though he was well shadowed by Paton. The reappearance of Joe Johnston on the Motherwell extreme left was a surprise. He was their outstanding forward, and it was following one of his low crosses that his side took the lead after twenty-nine minutes.
Hectic Scrimmage
Johnstone, the Aberdeen 'keeper, turned Watters' try out with his foot and a hectic scrimmage developed in the goalmouth, half a dozen players being locked together.
The incident ended with Watters, the home outside-right, pushing the ball over the line at second attempt.
Aberdeen got the equaliser two minutes later. Baird sent a pass up the wing to Pearson, who placed the ball for Kelly to shoot high into the roof of the net. It was easily the best goal of the match.
A penalty kick decided the issue. Mathie was cutting through when brought down by McLaughlin, and Kilmarnock scored from the spot.
