With Aberdeen lying fourth in the league, lust behind Hibs and Rangers but 9 points adrift of Celtic, and with the Bairns fighting against relegation, only 5,500 fans were present. The opening stages were scrappy but Aberdeen struck in 7 minutes. A Joe Smith free kick was dummied by Davie Robb and Willie Young's low left foot shot gave Donaldson no chance. Billy Pirie was making his debut but was having a quiet start. Aberdeen were exerting plenty of pressure but Falkirk hit back and appealed for a penalty when Young floored Lawson. Then Cameron had a shot which failed to trouble Bobby Clark. After forcing play by Eddie Thomson, Smith shot wide. In a couple of Falkirk breakaways Wheatley twice missed reasonable chances. In the 29th minute Drew Jarvie's shot rebounded off the underside of the bar but 5 minutes later he scored the first of his quartet from a corner and shortly afterwards he tested Donaldson with a low shot. Right on half-time Pirie tried to round the keeper who saved well.

Twice in as many minutes Pirie tried to get his name on the score-sheet but was thwarted by the big keeper. It was not the new striker's day - 5 minutes later his net-bound header was cleared off the line by Whiteford. Thomson then broke through and saw his shot rebound off Donaldson's legs. He then lofted the ball to Pirie whose shot was blocked. It was now one-way traffic and, in 61 minutes, Robb charged through for Jarvie to net his second. Pirie then had two more efforts but was denied a goal yet again. In an isolated raid a Wheatley shot swerved just wide of Clark's goal. Falkirk sent on Harley for Shirra in 73 minutes and within a minute they were four down. Jarvie completed his hat-trick when Donaldson managed to palm out a shot from the unlucky Pirie only for Jarvie to net the rebound. A minute later it was 5-0 when Robb worked a quick one-two with Jarvie and lashed a tremendous shot into the net. Jarvie scored his fourth and the Dons' sixth in 77 minutes (3 goals in 4 minutes). Pirie and Robb did the leading-up work and Jarvie scored easily from Robb's pass. Arthur Graham then missed an easy chance from a shrewd Jarvie pass. Two minutes from time Willie Miller limped off, to be replaced by Ian Taylor.
