League Cup Group 3
Aberdeen 3 - 0 Airdrie
Kick Off:  3:00 PM   Hewitt 12, Weir 37, Strachan 89 (Pen).
Attendance: 7,000
Venue: Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen
Dons' wingers, John Hewitt and Peter Weir took the aerial route to goal to give Aberdeen a comfortable two goal lead in an entertaining 1st half at Pittodrie. Despite being under extreme pressure Airdrie always tried to play constructive football and on several occassions they stretched the Dons' defence without ever seriously testing Jim Leighton. New signing Peter Weir, who was now a firm favourite with the home support, put Aberdeen in easy street with a headed goal in the 37th minute and 4 minutes later a tremendous volley by the same player almost shattered the Pittodrie goal post. A Gordon Strachan penalty late in the 2nd half completed the scoring and set up a Pittodrie showdown with Hearts, the club's nearest challengers.
