Mitchell Goal Sinks Dons

An uneventful game at Rugby Park saw the Dons lose 1-0 to Kilmarnock. It was a game which provided little in the way of chances or talking points, the biggest controversy, an Aberdeen penalty claim in the second half that was turned down. The first real chance came in the 19th minute, Dons young goalkeeper Ryan Esson fumbled the ball, but Andy Mclaren's goalbound effort was cleared off the line by the Dons defence. Five minutes later, ex-Rangers veteran Ally McCoist came close for the home side, his long range header just beating the Dons crossbar. Kilmarnock took the lead in the 28th minute. On-form Ally Mitchell broke free and slotted the ball past the helpless Ryan Esson. The goal looked suspiciously offside, but it stood, and it was 1-0 to Kilmarnock. Aberdeen pressed for the equaliser, without ever really getting a clear cut effort on goal. The teams went in at half-time, with the Dons trailing by a goal to nil.

The second half started well for the Dons, they piled on the pressure for the equaliser. Eoin Jess came close with a brilliant long range effort, but it dipped just over the bar. Chances fell for Winters, Whyte and McGuire but none of the Dons could get the ball past Killie keeper Gordon Marshall. With minutes remaining, the Dons came close once again, but the home defence stood strong to deny Aberdeen a point, and maintain Kilmarnock's good home record against the Dons.
