Soft Penalty Hands United a Draw |
 |
Aberdeen picked up a point away to Dundee United, with controversary surrounding
the United equaliser. Derek Whyte was adjudged to have handled the ball in the
penalty area, but it clearly looked as if the ball had struck him, rather than
the other way round. The Dons got off to a great start when ROBBIE WINTERS thumped
the ball past a helpless Stephen Gallagher in the Dundee United goal after just
13 minutes.
David Rowson had a long range effort on 26 minutes, that went just over the
bar before Ryan Esson pulled off a good save, holding well when he could have
easily spilled the ball.
Robbie Winters came close after some great work on the left hand side. After
playing the ball to Derek Young, he then got it back and hit a shot just wide
of Gallagher's post. Three minutes before the break Dundee United were awarded the penalty. Ex-Ranger's
midfielder Charlie Miller stepped up, and gave Ryan Esson no chance whatsoever
from the spot.
Just after the break, Darren Young had an attempt on goal, but he scooped
it over the bar. Jim Lauchlan saved United's blushes when he brilliantly denied Derek Young
a shot on goal with a saving tackle with 14 minutes to go. In the 79th minute
Arild Stavrum had a brilliant run, beating a couple of United players on
the way, before deciding to be unselfish rather than take a shot himself. The
chance
came to nothing.
Derek Whyte nearly got his first Dons goal in the 82nd minute, but his shot
was cleared off the line. With a minute left on the clock, substitute Chris
Clark had a chance of a shot on goal, but he chipped the ball over the bar.
