Late Loundes Goal Denies Dons Three Points |
 |
A last gasp equaliser by substitute Nathan Lowndes denied the Dons all three points, on a night which saw both Young brothers grab a goal for Aberdeen. Ex-Celtic youngster JOHN PAUL MCBRIDE made it 1-0 to the visitors after 25 minutes, after he made a good run to get into a scoring position, heading home a Paul Hartley cross. Saints lead was short lived however, with the Dons equaliser just five
minutes later.
DARREN YOUNG grabbed his first goal of the season, after his shot deflected off the unfortunate Stuart McCluskey and found its way past the helpless Alan Main who was committed to diving in what proved to be the wrong direction.
ROBBIE WINTERS hit his 11th goal of the season just after that, and his cool finish gave the Dons a 2-1 lead, with the Saints defence appealing for an offside flag which never appeared. Derek Young was booked in the 40th minute for dissent, and moments later Scotland Under 21 international colleague Ryan Esson pulled off a superb save, punching clear a Paul Hartley drive. Phil McGuire then earned a yellow card when he hauled down Keigan Parker.
H.T. 2-1
Just as the game started to look dull, JOHN PAUL MCBRIDE made it 2-2 with a well taken goal. Slack marking in the Aberdeen defence led to McBride volleying past Esson from a Parker cross to make it 2-2. Once again the St Johnstone lead was short lived, as straight from kick-off the Dons pressed forward, and DEREK YOUNG found the net to put the Dons ahead for the second time in the match, shooting home an early cross from Winters.
Aberdeen were firmly in control after that, but should have put the game beyond doubt. Rachid Belabed and Derek Whyte came close with good efforts, but at 3-2 there was always a chance of St Johnstone coming back into it. In the 87th minute they did just that, as NATHAN LOWNDES capitalized on an opportunity which came via a long punt up the park, and made it 3-3 to give both sides a share of the spoils.
