Dons Top Bottom Six Despite Last Day Defeat |
 |
Aberdeen have finished the season as the best placed team in the bottom half
of the SPL, despite a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Dundee United. The Tannadice
club got off to the perfect start, when they opened the scoring after just 4
minutes. Their Greek internation VENETIS finding space in the Don's defence and
firing home to make it 1-0. Aberdeen's misery got worse in the 16th minute, when
DEREK LILLEY struck home after ex-Don Jim Hamilton knocked the ball down for
him.
Robbie Winters and Derek Young both came close to pulling one back in the
remainder of the first half, but they couldn't break down the visitor's defence.
Aberdeen came close in the 50th minute with good play from Darren Young and
Arild Stavrum, but the eventual shot was cleared off the line by the United
defence.
ARILD STAVRUM played well throughout and finally broke the deadlock in the
73rd minute to put the pressure on United.
Aberdeen introduced youngsters Darren Michie and Ross O'Donoghue, and O'Donoghue
came close to equalising twice, with two good long range efforts. Despite
Aberdeen coming into the game in the last ten minutes, they couldn't find
a way back into
the game, and United ran out 2-1 winners.
