match report 1912-13 fixture list
Inter-City League
14/10/1912

Rangers 5 - 2 Aberdeen
Kick Off:    Parker, Hogg, Goodwin, Paterson, Campbell (pen)       Milne, Milne.
Attendance: 1,300
Venue: Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow
The first match in the new Inter-City League was played at Ibrox Park yesterday. Rain fell heavily and affected the attendance, only 33 being drawn. Both teams were under strength, owing to unavoidable causes. Milne opened the scoring for Aberdeen, and close on the interval Parker equalised. Half-time -one goal each. Rangers had much the best of the second half. Hogg early gave them the lead, and although Milne again brought the scores level, the home team ran out easy winners with additional goals scored by Goodwin, Paterson, and Campbell, the last named converting a penalty. Result:- Rangers, 5 goals; Aberdeen, 2 goals.

Everything conspired to make the Inter-City League match between Aberdeen and the Rangers at Ibrox yesterday a complete failure. Glasgow has had a surfeit of football, and the additional circumstances that the Rangers' team was far from representative owing to injuries, were factors which militated against the success of that fixture. There was but a parochial attendance of spectators.

Aberdeen kicked off against the wind and rain and at the outset they showed some sweet footwork, despite the elements. Soye and Walker got nicely away, but Ormond chipped in and cleared. Rangers then attacked on the left, but Colman cleared with ease. A foul against Riddell for pushing Milne led up to the first goal for Aberdeen. Soye sent across a nice centre, and Hempsey, miss judging the flight of the ball, Milne headed a nice goal. Afterwards McConnell shot hard over from long range. Rangers, through Parker, came near equalising, two shots by Reid's deputy being just wide of the mark. Logan had a full drive from 30 yards, but King very ably dealt with a high ball. From a corner, accurately placed by Soye, Walker had a clever hook shot a foot over the bar, and then Wood raced from midfield and squared across the goalmouth. His colleagues were not up in time. It was a nice came to watch, the players indulging in free and easy football, seldom seen in a strenuous League games. Aberdeen found it no easy matter to get going against the wind, and only Soye could make headway. Rangers could have equalised long before they did, and it was due to very faulty shooting that they failed to find the net until near the interval. Paterson practically gained the goal through the accuracy of a corner kick taken by him, but Parker had the honour of heading through. As the game, it was lacking in thrills, all the players taking matters very Crumley.

Within 4 minutes of the resumption, Rangers secured a second goal very easily, Paterson careered along the wing and stalled off a challenge by Wilson. The Aberdeen backs failed to clear the centre, and Hogg rushed the ball into the net. A beautiful movement by Soye, Travers, and Milne was deservedly cheered, but Wood spoiled everything by passing too far ahead. Aberdeen's second goal was the best item of the day. Milne was the hero of this splendid incident. Receiving the ball from Wilson, he dashed between the home backs, and, keeping the sphere under perfect command, he waited until close in on Hempsey, whom he outwitted with a fast low shot. Aberdeen lost the services of Milne, and their depleted forces were not able to hold the Rangers, who never relaxed their efforts. Goodwin beat King with a fast, rising ball, following a sharp attack by the Rangers' right wing, and 3 minutes later Paterson added a fourth goal with a brilliant oblique shot. On to the finish the Rangers had practically all the game. Campbell added a fifth goal for the Rangers from a penalty kick.
