Dons Draw at Newcastle |
 |
In the final match of the season at St James's Park, Newcastle, Newcastle United drew at a goal each with Aberdeen. The Scottish North-Eastern League Cup Winners played capital football. Indeed, their combination was often better than United's, but the pace of the ball early on seemed to beat them, and there was also a lack of finish to their attacks at close quarters. Their best marksman was Taylor at left half, who twice with long shots just failed to beat Theaker, and it was he who in the end enabled them to draw by scoring from the penalty spot five minutes from the finish. Early in the second half Newcastle took the lead through McQuade. Like Aberdeen, United suffered from a lack of marksmanship, and when called upon Johnstone in the visitor's goal was generally able to clear easily. Aberdeen had a sound right back in Cooper, and Gavin at centre half kept close watch on Short, while Taylor was a capital wing half. Forward, the right wing, with Pattillo often crossing the ball well, were prominent in the first half, but Dryden was more in the picture on the left later, and Downie should have scored on at least two occasions. He had also missed an open goal just before the interval. Hunter at centre was also remiss in his finishing, although good in approach play.
