Charity Cup
Victoria United 2 - 1 Orion
Kick Off:    Burnett, Ritchie       Barron
Attendance: 0
Venue: Victoria Bridge, Aberdeen
These teams met at Victoria Bridge Grounds, Torry, last night, before a large attendance of spectators. Both had powerful elevens, the players being: Orion: Watson; Scott, Ross; Currie, Low, Wilson, Hogg, Murphy (Melrose), Barron, Grant, Webster. Vics: Findlay; McNeil, Kilgour; Russell, Anderson, Mackenzie; McPherson, Henderson, McIlvenny, Burnett, Ritchie. Mr Black, Forfar, was referee. The Vics won the toss, and Barron kicked off against a pretty strong breeze. Ends were frequently changed, and both defences were alternately hard at work. Orion had if anything most of the play, and the game on both sides was conducted with vigour. A smart run up almost finished in disaster for the Vics, but Findlay saved twice in a masterly fashion, and the ball hovered about midfield. A couple of corners in rapid succession for the "Blues" proved fruitless, and the next minute Webster was racing down the wing for the "Stripes." A smart centre resulted, but Barron kicked over the bar. Again Orion pressed, and, in attempting to relieve by kicking over his head, McNeil mulled, and gave the opposing forwards a fine opportunity for getting in. Grant dashed up, but the ball went over the line. From the kick out, the Vics got off, and were soon in the vicinity of Watson, where a couple of exciting scrimmages in the goalmouth took place. Barron missed a good opening, and shortly after Hogg made a fine attempt to make amends, but the ball just grazed the bar on the wrong side. The Vics pressed, and Watson had to kick strong to save his goal. At half-time Orion were again pressing. Score: Orion 0, Victoria United 0.

On resuming, enthusiasm ran high when the Vics made off towards Watson in a body. A smart shot from McIlvenny was cleared with difficulty, and before Watson could right himself the Blues were clustering round him. A powerful kick transferred play to the other end, and Findlay had his turn of pressing. Orion then took up the running, but the final effort was botched by the left-wing couple. A determined effort by the Vics was almost successful, but Ritchie ended by shooting high over the bar. Grant did likewise at the other end a few minutes later. Shortly after Burnett scored for the Vics amid great cheering, Orion now pressed vigorously, and success finally crowned their efforts, Barron putting in the equalising goal from a fine centre from Webster. Even play resulted till two minutes from time, when the Vics made a final effort, and, with a fine passing bout which completely baffled the Orion backs, came round Watson, while Ritchie, accepting a very neat pass, kicked the winning goal. The rest of the game was played amid great excitement, and the youthful portion of the spectators breaking bounds clustered round the Orion custodian. Final score: Victoria United 2, Orion 1.
