Miller's 50-second Goal For Wee Dons
WE SUFFERED another disappointing defeat at Shawfield last Saturday, again losing two points to two late goals. It's a pity that we have not been able to produce the goods this season when the Reserve League championship is much more open than usual. But I'm sure the young Dons will soon start climbing into the top half of the table. All they need is a good result or two to boost their confidence.
They played good football in the first half against Clyde A and it was only when the stronger-built, more experienced Shawfield team started to throw their weight about after the interval that the young Dons lost the initiative. Height and weight are not everything, of course, as John Craig proved. Although fielded at left back only through an injury to Chic McLelland, John was the best player on the pitch, hardly putting a foot wrong. Even a nasty scrape across his chest from an opponent's boot did not knock him out of his stride. Jimmy Smith played well as sweeper and Tommy Wilson, switched to midfield, looked much happier in his new role.
Ian Hair, faced with an old campaigner in Eddie Mulheron, tried hard with a fair measure of success until he tired and was replaced by Joe Smith, who can look back with satisfaction on his abbreviated appearance. Jimmy Miller again worked hard and gave the young Dons a flying start with a first-minute goal. The other goals were both scored by Ian Purdie from free kicks. Charlie Elvin also did quite well, considering it was his first competitive outing for several weeks.
Although we lost late goals I couldn't fault the lads for fighting all the way. To score three away from home and still lose is a bit frustrating for all concerned.
