Aberdeen's youth squad earned themselves a crack at defending champions Dundee United in the quarter-finals of the B.P. Scottish Youth Cup when they scored a 5-0 win over Forfar Athletic in a third-round tie at Pittodrie.
The final scoreline suggests a convincing victory, but it was only in the second half that the Aberdeen youngsters established their superiority over a competent Forfar side.
After a somewhat nervous first-half performance, the Dons colts were perhaps a trifle fortunate to find themselves a goal in front at the interval, but that 44th minute goal by Kenny Gilbert seemed to be just the confidence-booster the Pittodrie side required.
The second half saw them take control of the procedings. Gilbert, who completed his hat-trick with goals in 60 and 83 minutes, was joined on the scoresheet by Andrew McCafferty in 64 minutes, the final counter being an "own goal" just before the end.
A disappointing feature of the tie, however, was Derek Adams and Vinny Rae both incurring bookings. The quarter-final meeting with United - at Tannadice early in the New Year - will be a stiff test for Aberdeen. United gave an impressive indication of their determination to hold onto the trophy when they hammered Celtic at Parkhead to the tune of five goals without reply.
Aberdeen, however, were not at full strength against Forfar due to injury problems which, hopefully, will have cleared up by the time the Tannadice tie comes around.
