For the young Dons, it was once again a case of mixed fortunes in the latest series of Premier Reserve League and East Reserve League fixtures.
While the Pittodrie second team came from behind to score a 3-2 win over St Johnstone at Perth, the thirds went down in a 3-1 defeat to East Fife at Methil.
The McDiarmid Park result extended Aberdeen reserves' recent Premier Reserve record to eight win in nine outings and increasd the number of three-goal tallies in that spell to six.
An away victory over St Johnstone - conquerors of Rangers a week earlier - was a creditable scalp to claim, particularly for an Aberdeen team showing a number of changes due to absences on first-team duty and the accommodation of "rested" first-team regulars.
Despite the early blow of Kenny Gilbert having to go off with an ankle injury after only eight minutes, the visitors made a reasonably good start and were first to score, but an understandable rustiness in their teamwork saw them lose their way for a spell and they trailed 1-2 at the interval.
A second-half fight-back and improving understanding, however, were rewarded with first an equaliser and then the winning goal, the latter claimed by Iain Nisbet, who was substituted for Paul Mason in the 72nd minute.
Aberdeen's earlier goals had both fallen to Hans Gillhaus, who might easily have had a hat-trick in a performance which demonstrated his willingness to accept demotion from the first team in the right spirit.
While the Dutch striker claimed the scoring limelight, great credit belongs to goalkeeper Michael Watt for a number of fine saves at crucial stages of the game.
