A controversial extra-time goal brought an end to Aberdeen's bid to regain the BP Scttish Youth Cup when the Pittodrie youngsters went down to Dundee United, holders of the trophy for the past two years, in a quarter-final tie at Tannadice.
Maintaining Jim McLean's reputation for producing a high-class youth team, United looked the better side for the opening 20 minutes, but the longer the game went from that point, the greater the visitors' confidence grew.
The 90-minute mark - and most of the extra-time period - passed without either side finding the net when a simple mistake proved costly for the Aberdeen colts. Seeing a linesman signal offside and the referee hesitate momentarily before waving play on, the Aberdeen defence paused just long enough to allow United to score the decisive goal.
It was a salutary lesson in playing to the whistle - but a poor reward for a very good team performance.
