There was great news for the U20s this evening as Daniel Harvie returned to action. The left-back broke his foot during pre-season and this was his first game since then. Paul Sheerin's injury crisis also improved with Joe Nuttall returning from a short lay off. However Scott McKenna, Jamie Henry, Kalvin Orsi, Craig Storie, Dylan Thomas, Liam Lambert and Stuart Rennie are still on the sidelines ahead of Sunday's SFA Youth Cup tie against Kilmarnock. As for the game itself, a strong and very attacking Dons XI proved too much for a young Thistle side who battled well throughout. Ryan McLaughlin and Peter Pawlett both impressed.

After four minutes McLaughlin set off on a fine run, but he just ran the ball out of play. Ryan played as a winger tonight, on the left and then on the right and had a very good game. After 10 minutes, there was some outstanding wing play by Wright as he beat his man before getting to the by-line. He set up a chance for Smith but his shot was blocked and the ball was just deflected over. From the resulting corner, Michael Rose timed his run perfectly but the ball clipped the top of the bar. On 14 minutes, Aberdeen took the lead. The Dons won the break of the ball in the middle of the park which set Pawlett free. He only had one defender to beat and, with space in behind, he left him for dead before unselfishly squaring the ball to Joe Nuttall who rounded the keeper before slotting home.
After a very strong start from Aberdeen, Partick came more into proceedings and did well to frustrate the young Dons. On 27 minutes, Harvie misjudged a long diagonal ball from Ryan Stevenson. McInally picked it up and put over a great cross, but there were no takers. On the half hour mark, Wright made another good run set up Nuttall, but his shot was well hit but too close to the keeper. Ten minutes later, from a similar area, Cammy Smith played in Pawlett who took one touch before firing in a shot which Waters did well to get down to and push wide. On 41 minutes, a Rose header from a Pawlett corner went close after Michael had made a good run to the front post. The Thistle keeper was then fortunate when his clearance went straight to Smith but Cammy had no time to react and could only watch as the ball rebounded off him and looped up onto the roof on the net. Next, a clearance off Pawlett was heading into the corner and Waters was forced to react quickly and make a decent save in the end. On the stroke of half-time, a Stevenson free kick was headed on by McMullin who thought for a minute he had scored but Mutch tipped the ball over the bar.

Partick started the second half well and were on top for a ten minute period, so it was against the run of play when Aberdeen grabbed a second. Cammy Smith did well to force a corner after 56 minutes and Pawlett's ball in was met perfectly by Rose. Although the keeper got a touch, he could do little to prevent the ball going over the line.
On 59 minutes, Thistle had their best chance of the game. Gary Fraser chipped the ball in behind the Aberdeen backline and McDiad beat the offside trap. He fired in a good shot but the ball just cleared the bar. A minute later, a ball down the line by Culjak set McLaughlin free. His impressive pace took him away from the defenders and although he was at a slight angle with options in the box, he showed good composure to slip the ball past the keeper for goal number three. Ryan very nearly grabbed a second minutes later after he burst into the box, but the keeper made a very good stop. Ryan was replaced shortly afterwards by Aaron Norris. With the game now won, the Dons started to play some great football and wave upon wave of red attacks should have led to more goals as Pawlett and Wright both went close. Thistle kept their shape and did well to defend the last half hour. They also had a few half chances but the Dons managed to keep a clean sheet as the game petered out in the final minutes.
