Hail the first winners of the Scottish Youth League! Aberdeen's Under 18 squad went to meet their Morton counterparts at Port Glasgow on Thursday of last week knowing that this new title was theirs - with three fixtures still to play!
Celtic's hopes of overtaking their Pittodrie rivals had evaporated earlier in the week when a drawn game cost the Parkhead youngsters two of the three points they needed to maintain their challenge.
Aberdeen's meetings with Morton earlier this season produced runaway 9-0 and 5-0 victories, but on this occasion the Pittodrie lads had to contend with difficult ground conditions and eventually had to content themselves with a 1-0 win.
Missing from the Aberdeen line-up was Greig McCulloch, who had been injured in a pre-match warm-up with his junior club, Banchory St Ternan, but Tommy Corkan proved a capable deputy at right back.
The winning goal was scored in the 56th minute by David Rowson, who supplied the clinical finish after leading-up work by Stephen Glass.
