Gain Right of Entry to Dewar Shield Competition.
BUCHAN SIDE PLUCKY BUT NEVER IN SAME CLASS.
Thirteen goals were scored in the match between Aberdeen and Peterhead, County Cup-holders, at Pittodrie last night. Of this total, the Dons claimed nine. This was the second of home and home matches for right of entry to the Dewar Shield competition - Aberdeen won the previous encounter by the odd goal in three. The Highland Leaguers, although game to the last, were completely outclassed, and, had the homesters desired, they might have augmented their total considerably. Scott, the home centre-forward, was responsible for five of the goals. The small attendance of spectators may have derived some consolation from the number of goals scored ? there was little else to enthuse over. At no period of the time had the Dons to exert themselves. They piled on eight goals to Peterhead's one in the first period, and after the interval contented themselves with practicing combination. Scott did add one more goal during the second period, but otherwise no serious effort was made to reach double figures. The best that can be said for Buchan side was that it was plucky. Their defence could not cope with the Aberdeen attack, and their forwards would undoubtedly have got less rope from the Pittodrie defence had they treated the match seriously. The Scoring.
Smith opened the scoring for Aberdeen after about eight minutes, and although Brinham levelled the scores with a smartly taken goal two minutes later, from thence onwards Aberdeen went steadily ahead. Devine gave the Dons the lead again, and further goals were added by Scott (4), Warnock and Smith. Brinham added a second goal for Peterhead, and Scott counted for the Dons. Buchan accepted two chances for Peterhead to put a better complexion on matters.Source: Press & Journal, 13th August 1935
