Ritchie Smith Scores in First Five Minutes
Jimmy Osborne's benefit attracted quite large crowd at Huntly last night. A strong crosswind made ball-control rather difficult. The game was only five minutes old when Gowans, the Inverurie Locos back, handled in the penalty area. Ritchie Smith took the kick and scored what proved to be the only goal of the match. The Dons certainly showed superior touches, but finished weakly. The Select were given few scoring chances, and Westland had little difficulty in dealing with anything that came his way. In the second period the Dons tried hard to increase their lead, but encountered a dour select defence. Milne, Huntly's young outside-left, deserved the plaudits of the crowd when he got off to test Westland with the best shot of the match. Subsequently Wood had a busy time in the Select goal, but the Buckie 'keeper was on top form. The same weakness in front of goal characterised the Dons' play this half, and there was not a decent shot in the whole forward line. Neish, Buckie Thistle, was the star performer, and had the Select van taken advantage of this player's scheming his side would not have been in arrears at the close.Source: Press & Journal, 24th April 1936
