Alliance Prospects Enhanced
Aberdeen "A" enhanced their Scottish Alliance prospects at Pittodrie Park on Saturday when they scored a smart victory by six goals to two over Hearts "A." The weather conditions made things unpleasant for both spectators and players, but nevertheless a fast and interesting game was served up. The Young Dons, although they won by a big margin, had to fight hard for victory, but they seemed always to have the better grip of matters and fully merited the points. The first half was the more evenly contested, but in the second portion the home side easily had the pull, although the visitors might have made better use the chances that came their way. On the home side Johnstone performed well in goal, and had several smart saves. Temple and Urquhart put up a solid and robust defence. The halves were a hard-working trio, Devine being the more polished, but for hard work Donald, at centre-half, took some beating. He filled his new position with credit and had a big say in the side's success, while Newton, without being brilliant, did all that was required. The forwards were a sprightly lot, fast and clever. Ritchie Smith was in grand form at outside right, his shooting especially being on the deadly order, and his three goals were all nicely taken. He got splendid support from Warnock, whose dribbling and passing was a feature. Scott, as usual, was lively in the centre, but not so decisive in shooting. On the left flank, Taylor and Lang put in a good afternoon's work in a confident manner. On a good all-round Hearts side, Harkness in goal did well, although he is not the 'keeper of old. Herd was the better of two good backs, who defended well. The halves all wrought hard, none more than Urquhart at centre-half, who proved a tower of strength throughout. Forward, Ferguson and Hume were the more dangerous wing, with Anderson always eager in the centre, while McPhillips and Mauchline on the left were always a source of danger. The game was fully twenty minutes gone before Hearts took the lead through Ferguson, but Smith immediately equalised with a glorious shot. He got another shortly after, and then Taylor got a good third. Just on the interval, Hume reduced the leeway with a good goal. In the second half Warnock soon put the home side further ahead in a goalmouth scramble, Smith adding a fifth with an express shot, while Scott secured the sixth point after fine forward play, Hearts being unable to reply.Source: Press & Journal, 16th November 1936
