Good Away Win Helps Aberdeen Challenge
With a fine win over St Mirren Reserves at Paisley on Saturday, by three goal to nil, Aberdeen "A" furthered their bid to retain the Alliance League flag. Interest in the game was increased by the fact that Aberdeen's latest recruit, Currer, from South Africa, made his debut in Scottish football. The opening passages were full of vim and smart play. The Aberdeen Reserves pressed almost continually for the first fifteen minutes, during which Smith all but opened their account. Then came a spell of attacking by St Mirren, and Mackenzie struck the post with a long-range shot. A few minutes later Aberdeen went into the lead, Devine finding the net from a free kick outside the penalty area. Close on half-time Smith increased the lead of the visitors, who had held the upper hand during the half. The St Mirren Reserves came away with a burst after the start of the second half, and the Aberdeen defence was kept busy until the pressure was relieved by Mackenzie shooting into Johnstone's hands. During this spell weak shooting spoiled St Mirren's chances. One of the best shots afield was McGregor, who. although really a centre forward, turned out at left back for the home side. Play evened up towards the close, but Aberdeen "A" were still the more dangerous near goal, and with only ten minutes to go Taylor, collecting a pass from Smith, put on Aberdeen's third goal.Source: Press & Journal, 21st December 1936
