LOSE INTEREST IN SECOND XI. CUP TOURNAMENT
Aberdeen A lost interest in the 2nd XI. Cup tournament on Saturday when they fell by one goal to nil in the semi-final at Ibrox Park. A snap goal by McAulay, Rangers "A's" inside-right, thirteen minutes from the close settled the issue. It was a hard, close game with little between the teams. Indeed, it was evident from the start that goals would be scarce, the defences being on top. Smith saved well in the Aberdeen goal, while McGill and Newton were reliable backs. The half-back line, too, played well, Currer, in particular put in some fine work, and combined splendidly with Warnock, at outside-right, who was the pick of the Young Dons' attack. Rangers wasted too many good passes, while they were inclined to favour individualism too much. The home lot missed a chance in the opening minutes when Turnbull shot weakly into Smith's hands. After this let off the Young Dons attacked, Currer being outstanding in the raids. He forced play splendidly and had two tries cleverly saved by Jenkins. The teams were evenly matched, and just before the interval Smith brought off a grand save. Reid took a corner and Campbell drove point-blank for goal, but the 'keeper threw himself at the ball and managed to throw it behind for another fruitless corner. Play was again even after the interval. First the Aberdeen goal and then the home goal was in danger. The defences, however, were equal to the demands made upon them. Just when it seemed that a replay would be necessary Rangers got what proved to be the winning goal. McAulay shot from twenty-five yards, and the ball found the net, the visiting defence being taken unawares. The Young Dons strove desperately for the equaliser, but the Ibrox reserves hung on tenaciously to their slender advantage.Source: Press & Journal, 29th March 1937
