YOUNG DONS SECURE POINTS AT PAISLEY
Aberdeen "A" started off the season in fine fashion, registering a well-merited 2-1 victory at Love Street, Paisley, over the St Mirren reserves. It was a hard game, in which Aberdeen's three newcomers showed up well. Kelly, the new South African goalkeeper, put in a good day's work, while Mackie and Erskine, right half and centre half respectively, who were signed from the junior club. Hall, Russell's, played effectively. In the St Mirren ranks was Tommy Devers, who was recently released by the Aberdeen club. The game was only five minutes old when Ritchie Smith gave the Young Dons the lead. The ball came out to meet him and he sent in a high dropping shot which easily beat the keeper. The visitors were having the better of matters, and for a time the St Mirren defence were hard pressed to keep their goal from falling again.EQUALISER
The Saints, however, came away strongly but they could not beat Kelly until, just before the interval, Devers equalised when he tricked the defence and induced Kelly to leave his goal. A few minutes after the resumption Warnock again put the Young Dons in the lead. One of the best shots of the game came from Deakin, the St Mirren inside-left, but Kelly saved in grand fashion. Aberdeen "A" were certainly the better side, and had things pretty much their own way. They were unfortunate on several occasions not to score. Close on time W. Scott had the ball in the net, but the point was disallowed for offside.Source: Press & Journal, 16th August 1937
