Aberdeen A Dictate Run of Play
Although they put up a game fight, an Aberdeen Junior League Select fell by five goals to two to the Aberdeen reserves at Pittodrie last night. A crowd of about 2000 enjoyed a fine, sporting game, and the receipts, about £29, will go towards the funds of the Aberdeenshire Junior Association. Aberdeen "A" always, held the upper hand, although at times the moves of the Select's attack held danger. They lacked thrust near goal, however, while they found the Pittodrie defence in splendid form.MAN SHORT
The "A" team's superiority was all the more marked by the fact that Taylor, their outside-left, was injured soon before the interval and did not return. The Juniors have to thank Crofts, their goalkeeper, that the score was not greater. He was best of an overworked defence, while in attack Tough and Oliphant took the eye. The outside-left was a clever winger, but could have got better support from Barlow, the inside-left, who was too prone to individualism. The Young Dons played well throughout. Defensively they were strong, while W. Scott led the attack in splendid fashion. He was well supported by the other forwards. and by the half-back line, who forced the play in fine fashion. Five minutes after the start the "A" team took the lead. Currer let Warnock off on the right, and the winger sent to W. Scott, who neatly flicked the ball past the defence to give Crofts no chance. Except for few breakaways, the Select attack was little in the picture, and it was no surprise when the Pittodrie side went further ahead through Warnock, who accepted a lovely cross from W. Scott to beat Crofts with low shot. W. Scott forced his way through the defence and gave Crofts no chance to avert the third goal.MISSED PENALTY
Taylor, a short time before he was injured, was brought down in the penalty area, but Warnock sent wide from the penalty spot. The second half was only minutes old when the "A" team went further ahead through Warnock, who defeated Crofts from close in from a Scott pass. Oliphant. who was dangerous on the Junior's left, led up to their opening goal, which was netted by Tough. A minute later, Devine restored the Young Dons' lead and in the closing minute Oliphant scored from penalty to give the Select their second goal.Source: Press & Journal, 19th August 1937
