JUVENILE FORWARD FROM HAWTHORN
AYR SAVE POINT ON WHISTLE
IT was only a last-minute goal by McConnell that enabled Ayr United "A" to share the points with Aberdeen reserves at Pittodrie Park last night in a Reserve League game, but the visitors were worth a draw. How near a thing it was may be gauged from the fact that there was no time to recentre the ball. The Aberdeen players had themselves to blame for the loss of the point. They held a two goals lead at the interval, but allowed Ayr to gain "the upper hand in the second half. The play of the home team was disappointing.TRIALIST SHINES
The brightest feature of the game from Aberdeen point of view was the play of Walter Pine, inside-left of the Aberdeen juvenile combination. Hawthorn "A." was playing his second trial for the Pittodrie second string and gave a promising display. He was the best of the home forwards. Aberdeen got off to a flying start. Armstrong fastened on to a cross from Pirie. but was held up by Taylor. Up raced Williams to find the net with terrific drive from twelve yards range. The home team got their second goal direct from a corner kick, and again Williams was the marksman. This goal came after twenty-six minutes' play. The finishing of the Ayr forwards was not impressive during this period, but five minutes after the restart a defensive blunder allowed them reduce the leeway. Harassed by Hunter, Nicholson passed back. Kelly failed to intercept the ball and Stewart helped it over the line.M'CONNELL'S GOAL
In the closing minute of the game Dimmer carried the ball through, parted to Stewart, and the centre transferred to McConnell. The outside-right beat Kelly with grand shot. Aberdeen were best served by Kelly, Cooper. Waddell. Pirie and Williams, while Ayr's best were Kirkland, Taylor, Dimmer, Stewart (centre-forward) and McConnell.Source: Press & Journal, 20th April 1939
