As an advertisement for Reserve League football this game at Pittodrie flopped badly. It was the Young Dons' first home game of the season, and they disappointed a good crowd by their feeble efforts to wear down the Motherwell defence. Taken all over, the game was just worth a draw. There was little attempt at combined play, although Motherwell always seemed more dangerous when they got on the attack. If Johnstone, their left-winger, had been as good at goal as he was in the outfield, they would have won.
For the first fifteen minutes Motherwell did all the attacking, and Hendry in the home goal was kept busy. Frame was then brought into action at the other end. and twice made brilliant saves from Pattillo and Baird. It was rather against the run of play that Williams put the homesters ahead in thirty minutes. Young miskicked and left the Springbok with an easy chance. The visitors tried hard to score, but they did not meet with any success until the second-half was seven minutes' old. Johnstone crossed a nice ball which was headed on Main to Ferguson, who crashed it into the roof of the net from close range. Play was ragged after this, and neither side really threatened danger.
Aberdeen were awarded a penalty mid way through thi6 half, and after spiritea protests by Motherwell, Pattillo took the kick and shot high over the bar.
In a poor home team the outstanding player was Cooper, who tackled strongly and kicked cleanly. Hendry and Waddell also did some good work in defence, but none of the forwards threatened danger Best for the visitors were Frame. Cheyne' Evans, Ogilvie, and Jeffrey.
