FRED MARTIN and Alec Young, the men responsible for the loss of goals, were the Dons' best players against Third Lanark at Cathkin.

Aberdeen were a poor team. They were unconvincing in defence and ineffective in attack. Shaw played reasonably well, but the wing half-backs had an unsuccessful day and Yorston and Baird played well below the required standard.
The Pittodrie officials are back where they started. The problems are still there and the recall of the old guard, judging by Saturday's display, holds little promise of providing even a temporary solution.

THE Aberdeen board was strongly represented at the Third Lanark match and I will be surprised if the same eleven are fielded the next competitive game.
The club have a friendly fixture with an Army XI at Pittodrie this week. The match provides the officials with an excellent opportunity of making fresh experiments.
Every enthusiast has his own idea of how to achieve a successful team. There is one school of thought who favour giving Young a run at back and bringing Thomson in at centre-half.

IT might be an experiment well worth trying, I understand, however, that Young is not particularly keen to play at full back. Of course, the player is an employee of the club and they are entitled to play him in any position they please. At the same time, if you look at the matter objectively, can you expect to get the best out of a player if you play him out of position against his desire?
There are others who would like to see Thomson tried at wing half-back, and amongst those who have made this suggestion are junior officials who have seen him in this position in his junior days.

FOLLOWERS of the reserve team are strong in their recommendation of Samuels as a first team proposition. The Pittodrie club have undoubtedly unearthed a promising player in the former Broxburn Athletic wing half.
I have seen him only once, but he struck me as having the makings of a good, and even a great player.
Whether or not he is ready for top grade football is a moot point. The problem which confronts the Aberdeen management is to decide if it is worth while taking the risk of rushing the player into the first team when the side is under a cloud.

ANY of these experiments could be put into operation on Saturday. The decision rests entirely with Mr Halliday and his directors. Certainly after Saturday's display at Cathkin there is no future in persevering with the present team. Judged on this game there is room for improvement at back, wing half, and forward.
