Speroni keeps Dons at bay

Julian Speroni was the hero for Dundee this afternoon as he produced three great saves to keep the Dons at bay. His first was a fine dive low to his left to deny Mike in the 5th minute and a minute from the interval he turned a Derek Young strike on to his post to keep the game level. It was brother Darren who was denied in the last minute of the match as his wickedly deflected shot was somehow kept out by the Dark Blues keeper despite him having to change direction.

After a cautious start by both sides, Aberdeen had the chance to take the lead in the 5th minute, but were denied by an outstanding save by Speroni. Mike finished off a good move when a chip cross by Derek Young was headed goalwards. It looked to be heading into the corner of the net before Speroni intervened. Very little was being created by either side as the game was played out in the area between both penalty boxes.

Darren Young had a 20 yard volley deflected wide for the first corner of the match and a minute later Dundee had their first shot at goal when Gavin Rae hit an effort over the top from the edge of the box. In the 22nd minute the Dons won a free kick wide right, but after much debate between Deloumeaux and McAllister the delivery was ultimately disappointing. Two minutes later Dundee had a chance when Novo beat Anderson on the left and cut back to Caballero. Fortunately the striker screwed his effort wide of the target.

The striker had another chance a minute later on the break, but he delayed and the chance was gone. Seconds earlier Mike had a powerful shot blocked on the edge of the box. There were loud appeals for a penalty in the 32nd minute when Mike went down in the box under a Hernandez challenge, but Mr. McCurry waved play on. The incident followed good build up play by the Young brothers. Two minutes later Kjaer was down quickly to smother a Nova effort.

Once more the Young brothers linked well in the 39th minute before Fabiano worked the ball wide to Mike. Unfortunately the Englishman's final delivery was straight at Speroni. In the final minute Derek Young showed a sublime piece of skill before delivering a tempting cross which was intercepted as Mike looked set to pounce. It was left to the Young brothers to create the best chance of the half in the dying seconds when Darren set up Derek. His shot was palmed on to the post by Speroni to deny the Dons once more.

Dundee made a stronger start to the second half and kept the home side pinned back for the opening five minutes. Aberdeen finally created their first chance of the half in the 53rd minute when a flighted free kick caused the Dark Blues problems. However it was scrambled clear before Anderson could connect. McAllister had a good effort saved by Speroni on the hour mark from a free kick 25 yards out.

Aberdeen started to take control and Darren Young went close in the 68th minute when he glanced a header on to the roof of the net following good work from Mike. Three minutes later Fabiano should have done better when he found himself clear with only an advancing Speroni to beat. He rounded the keeper, but appeared to slip and delay and the chance was gone. Seconds later Derek Young set up Deloumeaux, but the Frenchman pulled his shot wide.

Dundee were then awarded a series of soft free kicks around the Dons penalty area and the last of these almost produced a goal. The ball broke to Nova and he turned the ball wide with the goal gaping. Michie replaced Mike in the 79th minute and three minutes later he produced a looping header, which had Speroni scurrying back to hold. With four minutes remaining Darren Young tried from distance but the shot went wide.

Speroni was the hero for Dundee again in the 89th minute when he denied Darren Young. The Dons captain hit another shot from the edge of the box, which took a wicked deflection. Speroni was going to his right, but somehow managed to throw out a hand to the left to block the shot. Michie had another opportunity late on, but he delayed and the chance of all three points was gone.
