Dons book Hampden Final

Aberdeen eased past Hibernian tonight in their Youth Cup semi-final to book a Hampden date against Celtic or Ayr United. After a nervous opening 45 minutes the game opened up in the second half and goals from Foster and Watson ensured a second cup final appearance in three years for the young Dons.

Both keepers got an early touch of the ball to settle the nerves, but David Hutton had a heart stopping moment in the 5th minute when he failed to collect an easy through ball. Fortunately he gathered at the second attempt. Foster tested Brown in the 12th minute with a 30-yard free kick, but the keeper held it easily and five minutes later Hutton made a fine save from a Scott Brown drive. After 20 minutes neither team had managed to take control.

Aberdeen carved out an excellent chance in the 25th minute when a McKenzie free kick was headed into the path of Watson. The striker was forced wide, but still made Brown make a save at his near post. Hibs hit back in the 32nd minute when Hutton made a finger tip save to prevent the visitors from taking the lead. A minute later Aberdeen carved open the Hibs defence only for Souter's low drive to be deflected wide.

Aberdeen survived a goalmouth melee in the 41st minute, then should have taken the lead when McCulloch delivered the perfect cross for McKenzie who composed himself before bulleting a header wide of the post with the goal at his mercy. On the stroke of half time O'Neil was booked following a warning earlier in the half. The resultant free kick saw Foster released before firing a fierce drive inches wide of the target. After a nervous opening, the match was beginning to come to life.

Hibs made a brighter start to the second period and in the 56th minute Carella made a telling goal line clearance. A minute later Hutton was at full stretch to deny Brown the opener. After soaking up this pressure, it was Aberdeen who managed to make the breakthrough in the 69th minute with a well-worked goal. Carella went on a run down the right, beating several players before hitting the bye line. He looked up to find Foster in the centre and the young striker swept the ball into the net.

Hibs came back strongly, but a mix-up in their defence and persistence by Watson gave the Dons a precious second goal . Although Hibs pressed to get back in the match, the Dons held firm to book their Hampden trip.
